Bangkok: Governor Chatchart provided an update on the Khlong Thom Center fire, stating that smoke pollution is not yet a major concern. The main problem is high levels of PM2.5 dust. He urged the public to avoid the area and wear N95 masks.
According to Thai News Agency, Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt inspected the scene of the fire at Khlong Thom Center in Pom Prap Sattru Phai district and observed the work of officials. He stated that the fire was almost completely under control, but some smoldering flames and hotspots remained inside the building. Backhoes are being used to clear paths for officials to access and extinguish the fire inside, requiring caution due to the extensive structural damage.
Regarding concerns about smoke and toxins, initial measurements have not yet revealed alarming levels of gases or toxins. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured at approximately 0.4 ppm, and the measured levels are considered normal in the monitored areas. However, smoke and dust from the fire persist, so air quality will be continuously monitored.
What requires special attention right now is particulate matter, especially PM2.5, which was measured at approximately 630 micrograms per cubic meter at the incident site. Therefore, the public is advised to avoid the affected area if unnecessary, and if in an area affected by the smoke, wear a dust mask, especially an N95 mask. Vulnerable groups should exercise extra caution.
The wind direction is trending towards the northeast. Bangkok is therefore monitoring wind direction and conducting additional air quality measurements in areas along the wind path to assess the impact and issue continuous warnings to the public. In addition, Bangkok is using drones equipped with infrared cameras to help inspect hotspots and terrain from above to support planning and operational efforts. A map showing risk areas, hotspots, and wind direction is also being created to enhance safety during operations.
Governor Chatchart thanked the officials and all sectors for their continuous participation in the operation, emphasizing that Bangkok will closely monitor both the fire situation and air quality to ensure the safety of officials and the public, and will report on the progress.
