Bangkok: Flash floods have left a trail of destruction in Phrao District, Chiang Mai Province, impacting three sub-districts and 15 villages. In Mae Hong Son, a pickup truck was swept away by the deluge, requiring villagers to employ a tractor for its retrieval.
According to Thai News Agency, the floods in Phrao District were triggered by heavy rains leading to the overflow of Mae Ngat and Mae Kroen streams. Homes, agricultural lands, and rice fields were submerged, prompting officials to deploy flat-bottomed motorboats for rescue operations. While water levels have receded, low-lying agricultural areas remain inundated. Local authorities are conducting damage assessments in the affected villages.
In Mae Hong Son, social media buzzed with footage of a pickup truck caught in the floodwaters at Mae Nga stream. The vehicle was attempting to deliver goods to Ban Sao Hin in Mae Sariang District when it was caught in a flash flood. Rescuers used a tractor to free the truck, a task that stretched into the night.
Chiang Rai Province is also on high alert. Governor Chuchip Pongchai and district officials have mobilized backhoes to clear debris obstructing bridges. Concerns persist about the flood protection dike's ability to withstand the strong currents as rain continues. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) issued alerts warning of potential overflows in various districts, advising residents to monitor water levels and move belongings to safer areas.
In Phetchabun Province, similar warnings were broadcasted, urging residents in affected areas to remain vigilant, safeguard belongings, and protect vulnerable groups.
