Flooding in Central Thailand Causes Widespread Damage and Displacement

Chai Nat:Central Thailand: Flooding continues to pose a significant threat across several provinces in central Thailand, causing extensive damage to homes and agricultural lands. The Chao Phraya Dam's release of water at a rate of 2,500 cubic meters per second has exacerbated the situation, particularly affecting the Bang Sawoei Canal in Pho Nang Dam Tok Subdistrict, Sapphaya District, Chai Nat Province. The canal's water level exceeded the Bang Sawoei sluice gate by over 1.90 meters, leading authorities to divert water to the Left Irrigation Canal 1 to prevent further flooding in Sankhaburi District.

According to Thai News Agency, efforts are underway at Sarawat Canal to manage the overflow at the flood control gate on Highway 311 (Chai Nat-Sing Buri). Sandbags have been deployed to prevent water from crossing the highway, keeping traffic operational. Authorities are reinforcing barriers as a precaution against heavy rainfall expected between October 4-7, and in case the Chao Phraya Dam increases its water release.

In Uthai Thani Province, residents in Ban Koh Sawan, Moo 6, Koh Thepo Subdistrict, have been significantly impacted, with the Chao Phraya River flooding their homes for six consecutive days. Water levels have reached 1-1.5 meters, forcing some residents to live in temporary roadside tents. The main bridge across the Sakae Krang River is impassable by car, necessitating a longer route for city access.

Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province is also experiencing severe flooding, with water levels rising in the Chao Phraya River. Communities have been inundated, and residents have moved vehicles to roadside areas. In Moo 4, Phukhaothong Subdistrict, ground floors of homes near the river are submerged up to 1-2 meters. Drivers in the area are advised to reduce speed to avoid accidents.

In Chachoengsao Province, the flooding remains critical, especially in low-lying areas. Residents are evacuating as water levels continue to rise. A rescue operation in Soi Hua Sai 8, Bang Khla District, led to the evacuation of a 78-year-old woman who was stranded in her water-surrounded home. Rescue teams used boats to reach and transport her to safety at Wat Hua Sai.
