Bangkok: Four political parties have submitted an urgent oral motion to the House of Representatives in response to a recent train-bus collision accident. They are advocating for systemic solutions to prevent future incidents and ensure adequate compensation for those affected.
According to Thai News Agency, Members of Parliament including Mr. Nikorn Chamnong (Bhumjaithai Party), Mr. Sekasit Yamsonguansak (People's Party), Ms. Monporn Charoensri (Pheua Thai Party), and Mr. Sakoltee Phatthiyakul (Democrat Party) have proposed similar motions focused on enhancing safety standards in urban rail transport systems. They stressed the importance of addressing safety concerns and providing compensation to the victims' families.
The proponents of the motion highlighted the necessity for the House of Representatives to implement measures to prevent accidents from recurring. They offered condolences to the families of the victims, emphasizing the need for government assistance as many victims were primary earners for their families.
Mr. Nikorn Chamnong stated that the gravity of the incident necessitates immediate action. He emphasized the inadequacy of current compensation and highlighted the need for a systemic overhaul of the railway safety protocols. He also pointed out the significant emotional and economic hardships faced by the low-income families affected.
Bangkok MP Mr. Sekasit Yamsonguansak highlighted the prevalence of similar accidents, citing nationwide statistics of 60-80 incidents annually. He called for systemic solutions, including improved law enforcement, traffic management, and urban planning at intersections, to mitigate future risks.
Ms. Monporn Charoensri from the Pheu Thai Party advocated for a comprehensive approach to address the root causes of such accidents. She proposed a four-layer safety plan to reduce risks, including deploying AI technology and modifying infrastructure at high-risk intersections. She also urged the government for transparency in disclosing investigation results and investment plans.
Sakoltee Phatthiyakul from the Democrat Party acknowledged the recurring nature of such incidents and criticized past failures to address underlying issues. He referred to a previously approved infrastructure investment plan that was mismanaged, calling for serious action to resolve ongoing structural and behavioral challenges.
