Khon kaen: A new generation of farmers is emerging in northeastern Thailand, with Uud-Apisit Limwattana Piboon at the forefront as he transitions from a career in advertising to becoming a successful Japanese sweet potato cultivator.
According to Thai News Agency, Uud-Apisit, the owner of Ruam Suk Farm in Khon Kaen province, spent over two decades in the advertising industry before experiencing burnout. His pivotal moment came during a trip to Japan, where he was moved by the taste of Japanese sweet potatoes, inspiring him to cultivate them in Thailand.
Uud-Apisit's journey was not without challenges. Upon returning to his hometown in Nong Song Hong District, he faced the daunting task of starting a farm from scratch, armed with little agricultural knowledge. His initial attempts at planting sweet potatoes failed, leading him to seek guidance from the district agricultural office. Through perseverance and learning, he improved his techniques, eventually achieving a quality yield by planting the "Beniharuka" variety and mastering nutrient supplementation.
Despite initial sales challenges, particularly due to price comparisons with local produce, Uud-Apisit found success by capitalizing on the opportunity to sell at Bangkok's Or Tor Kor Market. This exposure helped him connect with customers who valued his product, prompting him to diversify his sales strategy. Now, 90% of his sales come from online platforms such as TikTok, Shopee, and Lazada.
Uud-Apisit's advice to aspiring farmers emphasizes understanding local conditions and crop specifics, alongside patience and resilience, as agriculture demands its own unique rhythm. His story serves as an inspiring example of how dedication and adaptability can lead to success in new ventures.
