Bangkok: Gamers and their guardians are being warned of a rising threat in the world of online gaming known as Game Item Scams, which are increasingly targeting players eager to enhance their gaming experience. According to Thai News Agency, Air Vice Marshal Amorn Chomchey, Secretary-General of the National Cyber Security Committee, has issued a warning regarding these scams that exploit the desire for rare in-game items, often leading to significant financial and personal information losses.
In the current landscape of online gaming, achieving higher levels and acquiring rare or powerful game items is a primary objective for many players. However, this pursuit has also opened doors for scammers to engage in deceitful practices. These scams often involve psychological tactics aimed at tricking players, particularly children and young people, into revealing their game account passwords or personal information.
Common methods include scammers posing as individuals offering to level up players' games or provide rare items for free in exchange for account credentials. Additionally, scammers may entice players to purchase items advertised at low prices, only to disappear once the payment is made. For those unable to transfer money, fraudsters may manipulate them into sharing personal photos or information under the pretense of item exchanges, posing a significant threat to privacy and security.
To protect against these scams, players and parents are urged to take several precautionary measures. These include not considering games as safe zones, monitoring children's gaming interactions, setting payment lock passwords on devices linked to credit cards, and ensuring all transactions are conducted through official and verified channels.
In the event of falling victim to such scams, immediate action is advised. Affected individuals should contact the AOC hotline at 1441 to request a temporary freeze on financial transactions and file a police report with all relevant evidence to increase the likelihood of recovering lost funds.
