Chiang mai: A husband and wife were arrested for forging medical certificates to claim COVID-19 insurance from a well-known insurance company, resulting in over 2 million baht in damages. Central Investigation Bureau police, in conjunction with highway police, apprehended the couple, who were allegedly part of the “Sick Thip Gang,” as they traveled between Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai provinces.
According to Thai News Agency, the couple was using a white car with Bangkok license plates when they were found driving near the Choeng Doi Subdistrict Municipality in Doi Saket District. Police surrounded them and identified themselves to make the arrest. The suspects confessed to paying 599 baht per month in premiums and revealed that they were approached by an insurance agent who promised to assist them in filing a claim. The agent offered a portion of the payment if the claim was successful, but the couple claimed they were unaware the documents were forged.
Authorities are now preparing to expand their investigation to identify additional members of the gang, as they work to uncover the full extent of the fraudulent activities.
