Bangkok: AirAsia MOVE has announced that Generation Y continues to be the dominant travel group during the Songkran festival for the third consecutive year. The travel platform's analysis of travel behavior during Songkran, spanning from 2024 to 2026, highlights Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Hat Yai as the top destinations, with solo travel experiencing a notable increase.
According to Thai News Agency, AirAsia MOVE's data indicates that Generation Y, or millennials, have consistently captured a market share of 37-39% in seat sales over the past three years. This trend is expected to grow further in 2025, with seat sales projected to rise by nearly 30% compared to 2024. Millennials are booking nearly twice as many seats as their Gen Z and Gen X counterparts, with a preference for vacations lasting 3-5 days.
The analysis also reveals that domestic travel remains a priority for Thai travelers, with Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Hat Yai maintaining their popularity. On the international front, Japan is the top destination for Gen Y and Gen X travelers, followed by Vietnam and China, which are anticipated to gain traction in 2025 and 2026. Despite evolving travel habits, the average spending per passenger is expected to approach 3,200 baht in 2026, indicating a growing demand for additional services.
Additionally, solo travelers have contributed significantly to bookings, accounting for 65%-75% over the past three years. This group is increasingly opting for shorter booking periods, typically 31-60 days before departure.
In response to these trends, AirAsia MOVE recommends that operators tailor their offerings to attract solo travelers by creating packages that include activities suitable for individuals and providing long-stay options, given Gen Y's preference for 3-5 day vacations.
