Bangkok: The government cautions citizens against believing rumors regarding the new phase of the "Thai Helps Thai Plus" initiative, which is awaiting Cabinet approval on September 22. The program has already seen spending exceed 161 billion baht, fueling purchasing power and providing income to businesses, thereby aiding the grassroots economy in overcoming the ongoing energy crisis.
According to Thai News Agency, the Ministry of Finance is set to present the results and related details to the Cabinet on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, for the potential extension of the project. Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, disclosed that as of September 18, 2026, the cumulative spending under the "Thai Helps Thai Plus" project totaled 161,555.6 million baht. With 26,040,623 beneficiaries and 1,192,528 verified merchants, the initiative has facilitated the continuous circulation of funds amidst pressure from rising energy prices and living costs. The spending comprises a government co-payment of 92,900.7 million baht and a public co-payment of 68,654.9 million baht, distributed through regular merchants and food delivery services.
Ms. Lalida emphasized that the core of the "Thai Helps Thai Plus" project is its co-payment mechanism, which merges government funds with citizens' purchasing power to generate revenue for shops, small businesses, and the service sector. This mechanism helps circulate money within the economic system, providing relief during periods of increased energy costs and living expenses. The project has successfully facilitated spending on everyday goods and services, with citizens co-paying over 68.6 billion baht, thus enhancing purchasing power and revenue for businesses.
Globally, rising energy prices are impacting inflation, purchasing power, and business costs, as noted by Fitch Ratings. Despite these challenges, the Thai economy benefits from consumption and government measures that bolster economic activity amidst global volatility. The government remains committed to initiatives that directly assist the populace and stimulate real economic activity, with "Thai Helps Thai Plus" addressing the dual objectives of reducing living costs and supporting business income.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Finance will present the project's results and details to the Cabinet on September 22, 2026. Any decisions on extending the duration, budget, entitlements, or conditions will adhere to the Cabinet's resolution. The government will promptly communicate official details to the public, and urges citizens to rely on information from official channels rather than unverified messages about project approvals. Eligible individuals can continue utilizing their benefits according to the existing criteria until September 30, 2026, with the government covering 60% of expenses, up to 200 baht per person per day and 1,000 baht per person per month. However, unused benefits from each month cannot be carried forward.
