Bangkok: The government and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) are joining forces to enhance the quality of life for Bangkok residents through initiatives such as a unified ticketing system, increased public spaces, and addressing issues like flooding, PM2.5 pollution, and traffic congestion.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chatchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, revealed that Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul presided over the initial meeting of the Bangkok Metropolitan Council. This meeting provided an opportunity for the government and Bangkok to discuss collaborative urban development efforts aimed at improving citizen welfare. The government is committed to supporting Bangkok's operations in various sectors.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized that Bangkok is a vital area for the nation, and both governmental bodies share the objective of enhancing public safety, transportation convenience, flood management, and PM2.5 pollution reduction. Additionally, there is a focus on improving traffic systems and developing public utilities.
The government plans to implement a unified ticketing system for road, rail, and boat travel, with the Unified Ticketing System Management Act B.E. 2568 (2025) and the Rail Transport Act B.E. 2568 (2025) already approved. The public is expected to access this service within the year, with a capped fare of 45 baht per trip.
The collaboration between the government and BMA will also see the transformation of underutilized government land into public parks, sports fields, and community spaces. This initiative aims to create employment opportunities while increasing public spaces.
Mr. Anutin expressed the government's readiness to support projects aligning with its policies to achieve tangible results quickly. He assured that the government and Bangkok will closely collaborate to enhance citizens' quality of life.
In response to the fire near Lat Phrao Intersection, Mr. Anutin reported that both he and Governor Sittipunt visited the site to assess the situation. Injured individuals are receiving care under the government's protection system, and support will be extended to those affected. The current death toll stands at 27, with a fund established to provide compensation to the victims' families.
Investigations into the fire's cause, including issues with the fire escape routes and sprinkler system, are ongoing. Mr. Anutin refrained from commenting on these matters to avoid influencing the investigation. He assured that legal violations, if found, will be addressed decisively.
The establishment involved holds a restaurant license permitting live music performances but is not classified as an entertainment venue. A comprehensive investigation into its operations and safety measures is necessary to prevent future incidents.
