Government Denies Reopening of Border for Cambodian Students

Bangkok: The government has firmly denied any plans to open border crossings to allow Cambodian students to enter and study in Thailand, citing the sensitivity of border issues and the need for careful review of information before making decisions. According to Thai News Agency, the government refuted claims circulating on social media about the reopening of the Ban Khlong Luek permanent border crossing in Aranyaprathet District, Sa Kaeo Province, for Cambodian students. The misinformation was acknowledged by the original source, which issued an apology, admitting the inaccuracy of the report and its potential to mislead the public. Despite prior clarifications from the government that the border crossing was not open, misinformation persists. The Governor of Sa Kaeo Province has directed the Deputy Governor and security agencies to guide media representatives to the Khlong Luek border crossing to present the facts. Legal measures are also being taken under the Computer Crime Act against those disseminating false information. Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, emphasized the sensitivity of border issues, which impact public sentiment and trust. She urged media and information disseminators to verify facts with relevant agencies to prevent the spread of incomplete information that could mislead the public and complicate border management and cooperation between Thailand and Cambodia. While respecting press freedom, the government warns that dissemination of false information affecting national security or causing public panic will prompt legal action. The public is encouraged to verify information, particularly concerning border and security matters, before sharing it. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated Thailand's commitment to protecting its national interests based on principles of sovereignty, peace, international law, and factual accuracy. The government stresses cautious border management to prevent societal confusion from false information.
