Bangkok: The government has announced an extension of the appeal period for the state welfare card program, introducing new criteria for the first time in five years. This move aims to enhance the accuracy of assistance provided to low-income and impoverished individuals.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ploytalay Laksmisangchan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, expressed gratitude to the public for understanding the government's welfare card eligibility screening system. A NIDA Poll conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration revealed that 43.26 percent of respondents were not displeased about not receiving benefits under the program.
Ms. Ploytalay emphasized the government's commitment to reviewing the welfare card screening process to ensure precise assistance delivery. The government plans to extend the validity period for eligible recipients and expand the appeals process. She reassured the public of the government's willingness to incorporate feedback and conduct a thorough data verification process before implementing new criteria. The welfare card project has not been open for registration for nearly five years, leaving many eligible individuals without assistance.
Ms. Ploytalay highlighted that the newly detailed database of state welfare cardholders enables more precise categorization by age group. The data indicates that out of over 9 million cardholders, more than 5 million are aged between 18 and 60, mostly without assets or income. This data will inform policies focusing on upskilling and reskilling to improve vocational skills, create income opportunities, and enhance the quality of life for working-age cardholders.
