Bangkok:The government is advancing reforms to the Thai university admissions system, known as TCAS, with the aim of reducing inequality and providing fair opportunities for Thai students to gain university entry.
According to Thai News Agency, Lieutenant Colonel Patthadarasmi Thongsalooykorn, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, emphasized the government's commitment to minimizing educational disparities. The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) is collaborating with relevant agencies to create a more equitable and inclusive TCAS. This initiative involves reassessing portfolio-based admissions criteria, entrance exam score weightings, and the quota system to mitigate potential advantages or disadvantages among applicants. These improvements are expected to benefit current high school students first.
The ministry is also encouraging the development of curricula that reflect global changes, focusing on essential future skills and lifelong learning. This approach aims to enable students to apply their knowledge effectively in their careers and promote continuous personal development.
Additionally, the deputy spokesperson highlighted Professor Dr. Yoschanan Wongswasdi's perspective that while entering university is an important milestone, it should not be viewed as the sole determinant of life success. Students are encouraged to pursue studies aligned with their interests and aptitudes, considering curriculum content and opportunities for knowledge advancement. Participation in extracurricular activities, such as sports and clubs, is also promoted for developing teamwork skills and social adaptability.
The government's goal is to ensure that all Thai children have equal access to quality education, irrespective of their economic or social backgrounds. The administration is committed to supporting young people in unlocking their potential, recognizing that a good education is about more than just passing university entrance exams; it is about equipping the next generation with the knowledge and skills necessary for a secure future.
