Bangkok: The government has unveiled the "AI Psoriasis" system, designed to screen for psoriasis using photographs, in a move aimed at enhancing the public health system and addressing disparities in access to healthcare services.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ploytale Laksmisangchan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, stated the government's initiative to advance public health services through technology integration. This effort is part of a broader strategy to incorporate digital technologies by relevant health agencies, thereby strengthening the healthcare system, improving public health capabilities, and fostering health innovation. The initiative aligns with the Ministry of Public Health's MOPH PLUS+ policy, which seeks to ensure all citizens have convenient, rapid, and comprehensive access to healthcare, ultimately reducing healthcare access disparities.
Ms. Ploytalee highlighted that the Institute of Dermatology, under the Department of Medical Services, has developed the "AI Psoriasis" system to analyze the redness, thickness, and scaling of psoriasis lesions from photographs. This technology aims to standardize and expedite assessments, particularly in regions lacking a resident dermatologist. While the AI Psoriasis system boasts an accuracy rate of up to 95% based on research datasets, further testing in real-world scenarios and with a more diverse population is essential. Initially, it will be piloted in healthcare facilities and networks associated with the Institute of Dermatology, concentrating on areas with adequate personnel, data systems, and patient referral capabilities.
"Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease impacting both physical and mental health and quality of life. It is linked with significant comorbidities such as psoriatic arthritis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Psoriasis lesions have distinctive clinical features that can be analyzed from imaging studies. The 'AI Psoriasis' system is an innovation that facilitates access to screening closer to home, reduces travel burdens, and ensures appropriate and timely specialist referrals. It also serves as a model for developing tools to aid the care of other skin diseases in the future," Ms. Ploytalee remarked.
