Bangkok: The government is leveraging GISTDA satellite data to simulate potential flooding in Nan city, enabling authorities to assess at-risk areas and plan evacuation strategies in advance.
According to Thai News Agency, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) has released a detailed flood simulation for the Mueang Nan district. This simulation considers a scenario where the water level at station N.1, located in front of the Forestry Office in Nai Wiang subdistrict, reaches 201.50 meters above mean sea level (MSL). The water level has already surpassed 200 meters above MSL as of 10:00 PM, prompting the need for proactive measures.
The flood simulation provides a comprehensive view of potential flood routes, affected communities, schools, and hospitals. It uses color-coded zones to indicate water depth, ranging from light blue for levels below 0.5-1 meter to dark red for levels above 5 meters, particularly in waterways and low-lying areas near riverbanks. This visual tool aids in easy interpretation for both the public and emergency response teams.
Lieutenant Colonel Patthadarasmi Thongsalooykorn, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, emphasized the importance of this simulation in decision-making. It offers vital information about transportation routes, water sources, and critical infrastructure, allowing authorities to assess high-risk areas, plan evacuations, and execute rescue operations effectively.
"This simulation empowers the public with essential information, helping them prepare and decide on evacuation plans in advance," stated the Deputy Spokesperson. The government aims to enhance its disaster response strategy under the "Digital Twin Thailand" initiative, transitioning from traditional maps to predictive simulations.
Captain Patthadarasmi underscored the role of satellite and geospatial data in improving preparedness and response times. The simulation serves as a precautionary measure, not a definitive prediction, and residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and the GISTDA website for real-time updates and evacuation plans.
The public is advised to use this simulation as a foundational tool for preparedness while continuing to monitor water levels and official warnings closely.
