Bangkok:Even after floodwaters have receded, residents returning to their homes must deal with belongings affected by water, necessitating thorough cleaning.
According to Thai News Agency, the Environmental Health Division of the Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health, has issued guidelines to prevent mold spread after flooding. Recommendations include ventilating homes by opening windows and doors without using fans or air conditioners, as these can spread mold spores. It is advisable to wear protective equipment such as N95 masks, non-ventilated goggles, rubber gloves, and shoes.
Materials that can be moved should be cleaned outside, while heavily molded items like mattresses and pillows should be wrapped in plastic and discarded. Initial cleaning should involve wiping moldy surfaces with a damp paper towel in one direction to avoid spreading spores, followed by a second cleaning using soapy water and a final wipe with an antifungal solution. Thorough drying in sunlight is recommended to kill remaining mold, and regular monitoring for new growth is advised.
The Department of Medical Sciences suggests additional methods involving 70% alcohol or a bleach solution for windows, doors, and tile floors. Wooden floors and furniture can be cleaned with baking soda or alcohol, and special care should be taken with furniture to avoid direct sunlight. Air conditioner exteriors should be wiped with alcohol, and filters cleaned separately. Moldy clothing and carpets are best discarded.
Various antifungal solutions are available, including mild options like vinegar and concentrated fungicides such as alcohol and sodium hypochlorites, which require specific usage instructions for effectiveness.
Self-protection is emphasized, and individuals are advised to shower immediately after cleaning to maintain good hygiene and safety.
