Heavy Rain and Potential Flooding Alert Issued for Southern Thailand

Accra:The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall for southern Thailand from October 19-25, posing risks of flash floods and landslides in some areas.

According to Thai News Agency, the department has announced that during this period, the weather will be influenced by a monsoon trough and the southwest monsoon, leading to increased rainfall in the lower northeastern, central, and parts of southern Thailand, including Bangkok. These conditions are expected to bring gusty winds and may cause further hazards such as flash floods, landslides, and mudslides, particularly in areas near waterways and low-lying regions.

The department's Announcement No. 5 (264/2569) highlights that heavy rain is expected to continue in the southern and eastern regions from October 19-20. From October 21-25, the monsoon trough will move northward, intensifying rainfall in upper southern Thailand and extending to other parts of the country. A cold air mass from China will also affect upper northern and northeastern Thailand, as well as the South China Sea.

Mariners in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are advised to exercise caution, as waves could exceed 3 meters in stormy areas. Although Typhoon "Champee" is currently located in the Pacific Ocean and does not pose a threat to Thailand, the department advises the public to stay informed through continuous updates.

Looking ahead, from October 26 to November 2, rainfall is predicted to decrease in upper Thailand, with mornings becoming cooler. However, the southern Gulf of Thailand may still experience heavy rain, strong winds, and high waves. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and heed weather announcements.
