Mae Sai: Heavy rains upstream have caused rivers to overflow, resulting in significant flooding across multiple communities in the Mae Sai District of Chiang Rai Province. As the situation unfolded, residents hurriedly relocated their belongings to higher ground in an attempt to safeguard their possessions from the rising waters.
According to Thai News Agency, the Sai River has continued to swell following intense rainfall in Mong Sat, Shan State, Myanmar, which is the river’s source. This surge of water has inundated the Mae Sai District, particularly affecting the communities of Sai Lom Joy, Koh Sai, and Mai Lung Khan. In response to the crisis, soldiers have been deployed to place large bags under the First Friendship Bridge to stem the overflow and mitigate further damage.
The local populace, still haunted by the memory of last year’s devastating floods, took immediate action to protect their homes and livelihoods. Although the water level has started to recede, there remains a palpable sense of anxiety among the villagers. It is anticipated that the water levels will continue to diminish, provided no further rain exacerbates the situation.
