Hong kong: Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the devastating fire at Wang Fuk Court, which occurred seven days ago. The decision comes after the discovery that several samples of plastic netting used during building repairs were substandard, raising concerns over the materials’ role in the rapid spread of the blaze.
According to Thai News Agency, Chief Executive Lee emphasized the need for a system reform and announced the formation of an independent commission to look into the tragedy. So far, at least 25 individuals have been arrested in connection with the fire. Lee stressed the government’s dedication to addressing and closing any loopholes that may have contributed to the incident to prevent future occurrences.
The Hong Kong government revealed that inspections were conducted on more than 20 samples of green safety netting used on buildings undergoing repairs. Of these, seven samples did not meet the required fire-retardant standards. The samples were taken from four of the seven buildings affected by the fire, and authorities plan to collect more samples from areas currently inaccessible for further scrutiny.
In the wake of the tragedy, Hong Kong residents have been paying their respects by leaving flowers and condolence messages near the fire site. This gesture is rooted in the belief that the spirits of the deceased will return home after seven days. The fire claimed the lives of at least 151 individuals, with police continuing their efforts to locate and recover bodies still trapped inside the building. Approximately 40 people remain unaccounted for as the search continues.
