Hong Myung-bo Steps Down as South Korea’s Head Coach After World Cup Exit

Seoul: South Korean national team head coach Hong Myung-bo has resigned following his early exit from the 2026 World Cup and heavy criticism from the nation. The 57-year-old legendary South Korean defender apologized to fans and took full responsibility for the situation.

According to Thai News Agency, Hong Myung-bo was appointed by the Korea Football Association (KFA) in July 2024 to coach the national team after a short stint from 2013-2014, signing a contract until the end of the 2027 Asian Cup. However, the team's performance at the World Cup prompted widespread criticism, leading to his decision to step down.

Hong's resignation comes after South Korea's first-round exit in the tournament, which disappointed many fans who had high hopes for the team's performance under his leadership. Despite his previous success and experience, the team's early departure from the World Cup did not meet the expectations set by the KFA and the South Korean public.

Hong, a former defender who played a pivotal role in South Korea's memorable run to the semi-finals in the 2002 World Cup, expressed his regret over the team's performance. His departure marks the end of his second tenure with the national team, as the KFA now looks for a new leader to guide the team through the upcoming 2027 Asian Cup.
