Bangkok: Angthong province is experiencing a surge in illegal burning of weeds, causing air pollution levels to rise continuously. Ang Thong's PM2.5 levels have been in the red zone for the fourth consecutive day, measuring 59.2 micrograms per cubic meter this morning. Violators are still found burning weeds in open areas, resulting in smoke and black powder spreading throughout the area.
According to Thai News Agency, despite campaigns and requests for cooperation to refrain from burning weeds in open areas, violations continue, such as in Yan Sue Subdistrict, Mueang Ang Thong District. Smoke and black powder from burning are spreading throughout the area, causing distress to residents, especially the elderly, children, and those with respiratory illnesses.
In response to the worsening situation, the governor of Ang Thong has announced a ban on open burning and agricultural burning to address the high PM2.5 levels, effective immediately until May 2026. The new regulations aim to curb the persistent air pollution problem that poses health risks to the local population. Violators of the ban face severe penalties, including imprisonment of up to three months, a fine of up to 25,000 baht, or both, as the province takes a firm stand against the continued disregard for public health and environmental regulations.
