Insect-Related Eye Injuries Pose Significant Risks, Experts Warn

Bangkok:Alarming reports have emerged highlighting the potential dangers of insects flying into eyes while riding motorcycles. This incident can cause severe eye infections and ulcerations that may impair vision and lead to blindness.

According to Thai News Agency, the "Verify Before Sharing" Center, with input from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sakchai Wongkittiruk, Chairman of Academic Affairs at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of Thailand, confirmed the validity of these claims. Ophthalmologists have identified three main dangers related to insects in the eye impacts and abrasions, the dangers of instinctive eye rubbing, and infections from bacteria and fungi carried by insects.

Ophthalmologists advise that large insects can cause corneal abrasions upon collision, and instinctive rubbing can worsen the situation by embedding foreign objects deeper into the eye. Infections from bacteria and fungi are also a risk, potentially leading to severe conditions that could require eye removal to prevent further damage.

In addition to insects, roadside debris like leaves and twigs pose a similar threat due to their potential to carry fungi, significantly increasing the risk of infection and vision loss.

For first aid, experts recommend avoiding rubbing the eyes and suggest blinking frequently or rinsing the eye with clean water to remove foreign objects. Immediate medical attention is advised if symptoms such as persistent irritation or blurred vision occur after an insect is removed.

To prevent such incidents, wearing a helmet with a visor is recommended, especially at night when insects are more prevalent. The report underscores the importance of protective measures and prompt medical consultation to safeguard vision.
