Lausanne: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced the temporary lifting of sanctions against the Russian Olympic Committee, marking a significant development in the lead-up to the 2028 Los Angeles Games. This decision reinstates Russian athletes' eligibility to participate in international competitions, including Olympic qualifying events in the United States.
According to Thai News Agency, while the sanctions have been lifted, the IOC has not yet resolved whether Russia will be permitted to use its national flag, colors, or anthem during competitions. The initial ban, which began in October 2023, was due to Russia's endorsement of a local Olympic committee in regions occupied by Russia from Ukraine, which was deemed a violation of the Olympic Charter.
Kirsty Coventry, president of the IOC's Athletes' Commission, stated that the IOC does not support the war and continues to back Ukraine, but it believes athletes should not be penalized for their governments' actions. Mikhail Dektierev, Russia's Minister of Sport, praised the decision, considering it a positive step for international sports federations to acknowledge Russian athletes fully.
Despite the lifting of the ban, it is anticipated that Russian athletes may face restrictions in certain sports. Some associations, including the World Athletics Federation, persist in enforcing their sanctions, banning Russian and Belarusian athletes until the conflict in Ukraine concludes.
The decision to lift the sanctions has faced criticism, particularly from the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and various international sports groups, who view it as a reckless decision. Additionally, Russian athletes returning to competition will undergo stringent doping tests to prevent a recurrence of previous doping scandals involving state-supported performance-enhancing drugs.
