Japan Braces for Disruptions as Tropical Storm Changmi Nears

Okinawa: The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned of heavy rain and strong winds from Tropical Storm Changmi in Okinawa Prefecture and surrounding areas until Tuesday, as the storm's influence is already affecting transportation in the area.

According to Thai News Agency, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported that Tropical Storm Jangmi (Korean for "rose"), designated as Storm Number 6 in Japan's classification, is moving north towards Okinawa Prefecture. As of 10:00 AM today, Jangmi was located east-southeast of Miyakojima Island, moving north at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. The storm is expected to bring gusts of wind up to 180 kilometers per hour to Okinawa and Amami Islands. Heavy rainfall, with up to 300 millimeters of rain, is anticipated within the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday morning (June 2nd). The public is advised to prepare for and be vigilant for strong winds, high waves, storm surges, and landslides.

The Japan Meteorological Agency also predicted that the storm would change direction, moving closer to areas from west to east of Japan throughout Wednesday (June 3), potentially bringing heavy rain along Japan's Pacific coast.

The latest situation today on Amami Oshima Island, an island in Kagoshima Prefecture, is that groups of fishermen have been busy tying their boats securely since Sunday. Meanwhile, people have started stocking up on supplies in supermarkets.

In terms of travel impact, approximately 400 flights have been cancelled today, mostly flights to and from Okinawa Prefecture. Reports indicate that some flights for tomorrow have also been cancelled. Japanese airlines such as All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL) are advising passengers to check the latest information on their websites before arriving at the airport to prevent any travel disruptions.
