Bangkok: With just 50 days remaining until the 20th Asian Games, Japan is gearing up to host the continent's most prestigious sporting event. According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Kongsak Yodmani, Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), announced that Japan is set to hold a torch lighting ceremony at Nagoya Castle on August 22, 2026. The sacred flame will be combined with those from past host cities Tokyo (1958) and Hiroshima (1994) before embarking on a relay through all 40 municipalities in Aichi Prefecture, culminating in the official opening ceremony on September 19, 2026.
The SAT has been proactive in ensuring Thailand's preparedness for the Games. Dr. Kongsak confirmed that Japan has completed the sports draw and communicated the necessary management measures to the participants. Thailand has made comprehensive arrangements for its national team, with accommodations split between the Athletes' Village and a designated cruise ship. SAT teams will oversee both sets of athletes and establish a Thai House center as seen in previous events.
The SAT will also send a delegation to study Japan's competition management systems, which boast high organizational standards. Having previously hosted the 2020 Olympic Games, Japan's expertise is seen as a valuable model for Thailand's future sporting events.
Dr. Kongsak highlighted the role of T SPORTS 7, in collaboration with partners such as NBT, MONOMAX SPORTS, and Thairath TV Channel 32 among others, in providing extensive live broadcasts of the Games for Thai sports fans.
The Asian Games, scheduled from September 19 to October 4, 2026, in Nagoya, will feature 43 sports with 469 gold medals at stake. Disciplines include Swimming, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Esports, and more, promising a diverse and competitive event for athletes and spectators alike.
