Bangkok: Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated on Wednesday that U.S. President Donald Trump assured her she could contact him anytime, following his phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
According to Thai News Agency, the assurance came after a Monday phone call during which Trump briefed Takaichi on his earlier discussion with Xi. Trump emphasized the strong friendship between himself and Takaichi and reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to close cooperation with Japan. However, Takaichi did not comment further on her recent statement to Congress, where she mentioned that a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan could threaten Japan’s survival and might necessitate a retaliatory strike. This statement has led to heightened tensions between Japan and China.
President Trump has not yet addressed Takaichi’s comments regarding Taiwan, while China’s foreign ministry reported that Trump conveyed to Xi the significance of the Taiwan issue during their conversation. Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara emphasized the importance of stable U.S.-China relations for Japan and the global community but refrained from discussing Xi’s remarks about Taiwan’s return to China as a crucial aspect of the post-World War II order.
Despite pressure from China, Takaichi has stood by her remarks on Taiwan, although she expressed Japan’s willingness to engage in dialogue with China at all levels. Reports indicate that Japan’s vice foreign minister is scheduled to meet with the Chinese ambassador to Japan to address ongoing issues and future diplomatic actions.
The situation has been further complicated by China’s criticism of Japan’s decision to deploy medium-range surface-to-air missiles to Yonaguni Island, near Taiwan. China views this move as an escalation of regional tensions and a potential military threat. This follows Japan’s recent deployment of fighter jets in response to a Chinese drone sighting near the island and Taiwan.
