Japan’s Tourism Sector Facing Major Setback Due to Diplomatic Tensions with China

Tokyo: A Tokyo-based tour operator reported a surge in Chinese tour group cancellations following the diplomatic spat between China and Japan that began last week, resulting in the agency’s sales plummeting to just 10 percent of its total sales by the end of the year. Twenty tour groups have already canceled their trips, representing 80 percent of its annual sales.

According to Thai News Agency, the tour company’s primary customer base consists of Chinese tourists. The recent cancellations have led to significant losses for the company, particularly due to the abrupt nature of the cancellations. The company had already made arrangements with hotels, restaurants, tour guides, and other related services. Management stated that if the situation persists for one to two months, they might manage to cope; however, prolonged issues could cause severe damage.

The conflict between China and Japan arose following comments by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to parliamentarians, suggesting that a Chinese attack on Taiwan would threaten Japan’s survival and potentially lead to a military response. These remarks angered China, prompting them to demand a retraction and cautioning their citizens against traveling to Japan, which led to the wave of cancellations. In response, several Chinese airlines are providing free ticket refunds to passengers, and reports indicate that nearly 500,000 Chinese travelers have canceled their flights to Japan.
