Madrid:John Rahm, the former world number one golfer and 2023 Masters champion, has publicly addressed his decision to leave LIV Golf. He cited his disagreement with the new model proposals, LIV 2.0, as the primary reason for his departure amid the league's Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. Rahm also mentioned that while he has not yet discussed a return to the PGA Tour, he is open to accepting financial penalties for a potential comeback.
According to Thai News Agency, Rahm was among LIV Golf's major signings in December 2023 and achieved consistent success in individual championships. Reflecting on his experience, Rahm expressed appreciation for the positive aspects of his three years with the league, noting the fantastic tournaments and excellent performances both individually and as part of a team.
The restructuring efforts of LIV Golf involve negotiating investment from BC Partners Credit as the league seeks to revive itself following its bankruptcy filing in February. During a recent court hearing, Rahm's legal team stated that he found the terms of LIV 2.0 "unacceptable," leading to his decision to part ways with the league.
Looking ahead, Rahm confirmed his plans to compete on the DP World Tour for the entire 2027 season. While he has not yet pursued discussions for a potential pardon with the PGA Tour, he is considering terms similar to those offered to Brooks Koepka under the Returning Member Program in 2026. Koepka had to forfeit his stake in the PGA Tour's Player Equity program, with damages estimated between $50 million and $85 million.
Rahm expressed openness to accepting a similar offer and punishment as Koepka, acknowledging the uncertainty of receiving such terms. He also conveyed excitement about the prospect of playing a full season on the DP World Tour, emphasizing the positive opportunity it represents for his career.
