Kim Jong-un Pledges Unwavering Support for Russia in Message to Putin

Pyongyang: North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un declared his steadfast support for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia, sending a message of congratulations on Russia Day, and expressing full backing for Russia's domestic and foreign policies.

According to Thai News Agency, Kim Jong-un conveyed his unwavering support through North Korea's state news agency, KCNA, emphasizing his allegiance to Russia. He praised President Putin's leadership in addressing threats and challenges posed by adversaries seeking to undermine Russia's sovereignty and security.

KCNA also reported that senior officials from both Russia and North Korea commemorated Russia's National Day by visiting monuments and cemeteries of fallen Soviet soldiers. Concurrently, the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang hosted a formal reception for North Korean dignitaries.

The relationship between Russia and North Korea has strengthened through a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty signed in June 2024, which includes provisions for mutual defense assistance in case of an attack. This partnership has intensified, with North Korea deploying troops to support Russia in the Kursk region. The US and South Korean governments have alleged that North Korea supplied artillery shells and missiles to Russia, although both countries deny any arms sales.

In addition to military collaboration, an agreement has been reached to open a land bridge connecting the two nations, set to be completed on June 19. Analysts believe this bridge will enhance trade and offer North Korea a means to bypass international sanctions related to its nuclear and missile programs.
