Landslide Blocks Highway 108 in Mae Sariang, 13 Hikers Rescued Amid Heavy Rain

Mae sariang: Heavy rain in Mae Sariang caused landslides that blocked Highway 108, disrupting transportation and prompting rescue efforts for stranded hikers. The highway, specifically the Mae Sariang-Mae Hah section, was temporarily closed but has since reopened after the landslide was cleared. Meanwhile, 13 hikers who were stranded due to flooding in Doi Lak Saen have been safely rescued.

According to Thai News Agency, the heavy rainfall began at 6:30 PM, triggering flash floods in the Huai Pu stream area, which affected the section of Highway 108 near the entrance to Huai Pu village, Mae H?? Subdistrict. The sudden influx of water rendered the road impassable for all types of vehicles. Additionally, a landslide between Ban Pa Chi Lang and Mae H?? Subdistrict caused significant traffic delays, with a jam lasting over three hours. Local authorities, including members of the Mae Sariang District Volunteer Defense Corps, worked swiftly to clear the debris, allowing the road to reopen by 9:00 PM.

The severe weather also led to a distress call from a group of hikers in the Doi Lak Saen area, Mae Hah Subdistrict. Due to the heavy rain and flash floods, Mae Sariang volunteer defense corps members, along with other officials, quickly coordinated a rescue operation. The hikers, comprising eight men and five women, were located and found to be safe. They were transported to the Mae Sariang Immigration Checkpoint for health assessments before being allowed to return home.
