Landslide Causes Major Disruption on Mae Sariang-Chiang Mai Route

According to Thai News Agency, highway department officials in Mae Sariang, along with machinery, have been deployed to clear fallen trees blocking Highway 108, the Mae Sariang-Chiang Mai road. The affected area is between Ban Mae H??, Mae H?? Subdistrict, Mae Sariang District, and Ban Mae Lai, Pa Pong Subdistrict, Sob Moei District, Mae Hong Son Province. Landslides, fallen trees, and four downed power poles occurred at three different locations since early morning.

The first incident, at kilometer 168, involved a fallen tree, which highway department officials have now cleared. The second incident involved a landslide, fallen trees, and four downed power poles. Clearing efforts are underway. Highway department officials in Mae Sariang are facing difficulties due to heavy rain, waterlogged soil causing continuous erosion, and large trees posing a constant risk of falling. As a result, the second incident, between kilometers 166 and 167, remains closed.

There is a significant traffic jam between points 2 and 3. At point 3, before Ban Mae Lai, Pa Pong Subdistrict, Sob Moei District, Mae Hong Son Province, a long stretch of land has slid off the road. Authorities had to open the road at point 2 first before they could bring in machinery to clear point 3. This may take time, and officials estimate that the road may be open to traffic around noon.
