(LEAD) KBO clubs lose key players to injuries

Two clubs fighting for a postseason spot in South Korean baseball have lost key players to injuries, with the second half of the season scheduled to begin Tuesday. The NC Dinos announced Monday outfielder/designated hitter Son Ah-seop will miss several weeks with a left knee injury. Son, the all-time hits leader in Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) history, sustained the injury during last Thursday's game. While playing right field, Son collided with second baseman Park Min-woo as both tried to make a play. Son left that game with the help of a teammate. Son became the league's career hits leader on June 20 with his 2,505th base knock. Son sits five hits away from his 15th consecutive season with 100 hits -- a streak accomplished by only three other players in KBO history. According to the Dinos, Son has his knee stabilized and will be re-evaluated after about three to four weeks. The Dinos finished the first half of the season in sixth place at 40-41-2 (wins-losses-ties). They are in a virtual tie with the SSG Landers for the fifth and final playoff spot. The second half of the season begins Tuesday. Son had been the Dinos' captain but the team said Park Min-woo will take over as captain while Son is sidelined. Earlier Monday, the Hanwha Eagles said their third baseman Roh Si-hwan will miss at least three weeks with a shoulder injury. Roh, the reigning home run king, has been diagnosed with partial damage to the labrum in his left shoulder, following tests on Saturday and again on Monday. The Eagles said Roh is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of three weeks due to "a great deal of inflammation" in his shoulder. In 2023, Roh led the KBO with 31 home runs and 101 RBIs, both of them his career highs. He was the only player last year with at least 30 homers and 100 RBIs, and he finished second to NC Dinos pitcher Erick Fedde in the regular season MVP voting. In 82 games this season, Roh is leading the Eagles with 18 home runs and 60 RBIs, and is seventh and tied for 12th overall, respectively. Roh p articipated in the home run derby during the All-Star break on Friday, but shoulder pains kept him out of the All-Star Game the following evening. The Eagles ended the first half of the season in ninth place, second from the bottom, at 36-44-2 but are only 3.5 games behind the Landers. They will have to make that climb without their top power hitter for at least three weeks. The Eagles have made just one postseason appearance since 2008. Source: Yonhap News Agency
