(LEAD) (Olympics) Shin Yu-bin finishes 4th in women’s singles in table tennis

Shin Yu-bin finished fourth in the women's singles at the Paris Olympic table tennis tournament Saturday, falling short of her second medal in France after losing to Hina Hayata of Japan in the bronze medal match. Shin, world No. 8, won the first game against fifth-ranked Hayata before going down 4-2 (9-11, 13-11, 12-10, 11-7, 10-12, 11-7) at South Paris Arena 4 in Paris. Shin has now lost all five matches against Hayata. Shin was trying to become the first South Korean table tennis player, male or female, to win a singles medal since 2004. The 20-year-old won the mixed team bronze medal earlier in Paris. She will now compete in the women's team event starting Monday. After the two players split the first two games, Shin held a 10-7 lead in the third game, a point away from grabbing a 2-1 lead. But Hayata won five straight points to take the game at 12-10. Hayata won the next game, too. Shin stayed alive by winning the fifth game 12-10 but bowed out in the sixth game. Shin conceded her defeat to the 2 4-year-old Hayata, saying she has a lot of work to do to get past the Japanese left-hander. "I've seen for a long time, and I know how hard she'd worked to get here. I wanted to recognize that," Shin said, when asked about her exchange with the opponent after the loss. "I gave her my heartfelt congratulations. Players who have beaten me have been trying harder for longer than I have. I have to learn from that, and put in my time and effort." Shin came within a win of earning a medal three years after losing in the round of 32 at the previous Olympics. She said she was pleased to see her work over the past three years pay off, though it wasn't enough in the end. "The medalists here all deserve to stand on the podium because they've really worked for it," Shin said. "I think I have to get better in every aspect, technically, mentally and physically."
