Mae Sa Waterfall Temporarily Closed After Flash Flood Sweeps Away Tourists

Bangkok: Mae Sa Waterfall has been temporarily closed following a flash flood that swept away tourists who were swimming in the area. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.

According to Thai News Agency, footage from Facebook user Arttie Martin captured the dramatic moment when the flash flood hit, sweeping away tourists at Mae Sa Waterfall in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai Province. The flood was triggered by heavy rainfall in the mountainous region at around 4:20 PM on August 15th. Some tourists were unable to escape in time, while others were caught in the current or stranded near the waterfall.

The Facebook user described the situation as life-threatening, happening in the blink of an eye. They recounted their experience of nearly joining other tourists at the waterfall when a park ranger's whistle signaled the impending danger. The user clarified that the video was shared not to infringe on privacy but as a cautionary message for tourists, emphasizing the need for vigilance, especially during the rainy season. Visitors are urged to heed warning signs, follow staff instructions, and monitor changes in water conditions.

In response to the incident, Doi Suthep-Pui National Park officials acted swiftly, evacuating all tourists to safety. Rangers at various levels of the waterfall sounded warnings, prompting tourists to vacate the area upon noticing danger signs. While most tourists sustained only minor abrasions, one individual who was swept away experienced headaches and dizziness and was subsequently transported to a hospital for further evaluation.

The temporary closure of Mae Sa Waterfall to tourists took effect on August 15, 2026, and will remain in place until conditions stabilize. Park officials are advising tourists to adhere strictly to safety instructions and avoid the waterfall and stream during this period.

Meanwhile, in Mae Hong Son province, a separate flash flood occurred at approximately 4:00 PM, resulting in the discovery of a missing person's body in the Yuam River near Mae Sariang irrigation weir. The body was entangled in debris and logs, complicating recovery efforts. Despite the challenging conditions and a prolonged search, the body could not be recovered.
