Bangkok: Maeklong dates have become a sensation in the Samut Songkhram Province, where they are so sought after that enthusiasts are required to book them a year in advance.
According to Thai News Agency, these date palms, which are grown in saline soil and supplemented with salt marsh waste, have gained popularity for their intensely sweet flavor. The "Baan Suan Date Palm Maeklong" orchard, located in the Lat Yai Subdistrict of the Mueang Samut Songkhram District, specializes in cultivating these high-quality fruits across four different varieties.
The orchard's unique cultivation method involves using saline soil enriched with salt marsh sediment, which enhances the sweetness of the dates, making them appealing to a wide range of consumers. However, the exceptionally hot and dry weather this year has resulted in a reduced yield for the "Konaisi" date variety, prompting many customers to pre-order their supply a year in advance to ensure they don't miss out.
Ms. Anchalee Weerasakayapong, daughter of the orchard owner Mrs. Anong Netsakulanee, revealed that more than 60 date palm trees have been planted, offering varieties such as Bahri Yellow, Bahri Red, Medjool, and Khonaisi. The trees are thriving despite the original saline soil conditions, leading to a high demand that sees orders placed years ahead.
The orchard also plans to open its doors to tourists for free tastings. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase fresh dates directly from the trees at a starting price of 100 baht per kilogram, along with other offerings such as date juice and dried dates.
