Bangkok: Mallika Jiraphanwanich, Deputy Minister of Transport, has urged the Department of Airports to enforce stricter safety measures during the upcoming Loi Krathong Festival in 2025 to prevent potential dangers associated with the release of sky lanterns and other objects.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Mallika emphasized the critical importance of maintaining aircraft and passenger safety during the festival, as the release of sky lanterns and similar items could pose significant risks to flight operations and pilot visibility within designated air safety zones. She has directed all airports under her jurisdiction to maintain vigilant safety protocols, especially in areas close to airports where the risks are heightened due to aircraft takeoff and landing activities. Additionally, she has called upon provincial agencies and other sectors to actively campaign for public cooperation in refraining from releasing potentially hazardous objects, thereby balancing the preservation of cultural traditions with the adherence to safety standards. The government has reiterated that while it will not ban Loi Krathong celebrations, it seeks public cooperation in modifying festivities to align with public safety needs and in respect for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother.
Mr. Danai Ruangson, Director-General of the Department of Airports, highlighted that the measures to prevent dangers during the festival are in strict compliance with existing laws. These include the Aviation Act (No. 14) B.E. 2562 (2019) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand’s (CAAT) regulations, which explicitly prohibit the release of sky lanterns, smoke lanterns, fireworks, and similar objects within aviation safety zones. The use of laser lights is also restricted in specific areas. The Department of Airports has stressed the need for adherence to CAAT guidelines concerning drone operations near airports, requiring operators to seek prior permission and comply with all specified conditions. Moreover, for areas outside aviation safety zones, the public is urged to consult local laws about permissible areas for releasing sky lanterns and to obtain necessary permissions from district authorities at least seven days in advance to ensure compliance with legal and safety standards.
