MANILA: Filipino wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan clocked one minute and 4.55 seconds to finish eighth and last in the Paralympic Games men’s 400-meter T52 event at Stade de France on Friday night (Saturday morning, PH time).

He placed seventh out eight qualifiers with a time of 1:05.79 in the heats.

The gold medal went to reigning world champion Maxime Carabine of Belgium, who won in 55.10 seconds.

Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Sato Tomoki settled for the silver medal (56.26) while compatriot Ito Tomoya got the bronze (1:01.08).

Over at Les Invalides shooting range, para archer Agustina Bantiloc lost to Brazil’s Jane Karla Gogel, 143-127 (25-29, 28-29, 24-29, 27-29, 23-27), in the opening knockout round of the women’s individual compound event to bow out of contention.

‘He was slow in the first 150 meters. Only in the last 250 meters did he recover and almost caught up with the one who took seventh place,” coach Joel Deriada said in a statement. ‘Jerrold also told us that he had a tough start. He offere
d no excuses. He knows that there is more he can do but that didn’t happen. In practice, he already clocked 1:02 and 1:03.”

At the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Para Games, Mangliwan had a personal best of 1:01.35 in the same event.

Still, Deriada said it was a noteworthy performance as he made the finals.

In Tokyo 2021, Mangliwan was disqualified for crossing the wrong lane close to the finish line.

Mangliwan has one more event, the 100-meter T52 race. The heats will be on Sept. 5 and the finals the following day.
