MCOT Conducts First ASA System Test in Thailand for Disaster Alerts

Bangkok:MCOT Public Company Limited has conducted the first test of the Advanced Situation Alert (ASA) system in Thailand, targeting alert areas down to the village level. The initiative aims to promote the practical implementation of disaster warning systems.

According to Thai News Agency, the ASA system was showcased on the DAB+ digital radio network, featuring automatic wake-up capabilities and operating without mobile signal limitations. This test represents a significant step forward in upgrading disaster warning and emergency communication.

The test was observed by Mr. Chib Chitniyom, a Senator representing the media group, and Dr. Thanapan Hraicharoen, Commissioner of the NBTC (National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission). The system functions like a cell broadcast but is more efficient, transmitting alarm signals and voice messages in both Thai and English to DAB+ digital radio receivers, even when they are switched off. It offers high accuracy in defining alarm areas, supporting connectivity to other media such as radios, televisions, and LED signs.

Mr. Chib highlighted the importance of the ASA system, noting its potential to address past issues of delay and inadequate coverage in disaster situations. Dr. Thanapan emphasized that digital radio systems can automatically activate and send signals during emergencies, allowing nearby areas to prepare for impacts.

The parties involved aim to have the system fully operational by the end of this year, or next year at the latest, to address the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters, as warned by the National Disaster Warning Center. This development is seen as a crucial step in ensuring public safety.
