Bangkok: MEA, or the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, is set to officially open “MEA SPARK, the Thai Electricity Museum,” starting October 1, 2025. This initiative highlights its dedication as a metropolitan energy organization to ensuring electricity security while preserving history and sharing knowledge with citizens. MEA SPARK is envisioned to become a prominent landmark and an educational resource in Bangkok.
According to Thai News Agency, MEA SPARK, the Electricity of Thailand Museum, narrates the history of electricity in Thailand and functions as a learning resource for urban lifestyles. The museum operates under the theme “Back to the Future Journey,” guiding visitors through the evolution of smart energy innovations. Combining historical insights, technology, and innovation, the museum offers interactive learning experiences. It is housed in Building No. 1, a 109-year-old landmark, formerly the first headquarters and power plant in Thailand, maintaining its original architectural design while facilitating interior exhibitions.
The museum is structured across three floors, each depicting different eras of Thailand’s electricity history through diverse techniques like objects, art models, immersive lighting, contemporary music, and applications, catering to all age groups.
The third floor explores ‘First Electric Light in Siam,’ covering the era before electricity and the inception of the Wat Lieb power plant. The second floor, ‘Sustainable Electric Light,’ showcases the development of Thailand’s electricity sector and the establishment of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority. The first floor emphasizes building conservation and the SPARK Zone area, highlighting the future of energy and Smart City innovations.
MEA SPARK serves not only as a museum with historical artifacts but also as a learning hub illustrating the journey of Thai electricity from its origins to its future. It embodies a blend of history, technology, and innovation, reflecting MEA’s vision of knowledge, progress, and sustainability, aiming to inspire Thai society towards a sustainable future.
In addition, MEA hosts activities to enhance learning and inspire visitors. One notable event is the ‘MEA SPARK: The First Light of Siam.Igniting a Sustainable Future’ photography contest, in partnership with the Royal Photographic Society of Thailand under Royal Patronage. This event, celebrating the museum’s opening, invites participants to capture the essence of MEA SPARK through photography, with submissions open from October 1 to November 30, 2025.
Another highlight is the MEA SPARK RUN charity event on November 2, 2025. The run takes participants along the historic Rattanakosin Island route, with proceeds supporting the Sai Jai Thai Foundation and the Ramathibodi Foundation under Royal Patronage. Applications are open until September 30, 2025.
Located at Building 1, Metropolitan Electricity Authority, Wat Liap District, Bangkok, MEA SPARK is open to the public to explore Thai electricity history and sustainable energy development from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
