Bangkok: Min Aung Hlaing confirmed during discussions with Mongkol that he is committed to leading Myanmar towards full democracy according to the law, developing the country for the better, and requesting Thailand to protect migrant workers. The President of the Thai Senate expressed readiness to support legislative cooperation between the two countries.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Mongkol Surasatcha, President of the Senate, received Mr. Min Aung Hlaing, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, to promote cooperation with the Thai legislature during his official visit to Thailand from August 6-7, 2026. Members of the Senate were also present to welcome him at the special reception room in the Senate wing of the Parliament building.
On this occasion, the President of the Senate congratulated the successful discussions held yesterday between the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Prime Minister of Thailand, as well as the exchange of cooperation documents on labor, sustainable river water management, and cooperation in peaceful earth observation technology. It is hoped that this cooperation will lead to expanded strategic collaboration in all dimensions.
The Senate President also stated that the Thai and Myanmar parliaments enjoy good relations at both the bilateral and multilateral levels within the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly. Both parliaments, as legislative bodies, must cooperate to improve laws and exchange best practices to address new challenges they face together, including cross-border environmental and pollution issues, drug trafficking and transnational crime, human trafficking, and online fraud networks, which directly affect the security, economy, and well-being of the people of both countries. On behalf of the Thai Parliament, he expressed his willingness to support and promote cooperation between the Thai and Myanmar parliaments, and was confident that this visit would achieve its intended objectives.
Mr. Min Aung Hlaing expressed his pleasure at the meeting with the President of the Senate. He noted that he had visited Thailand many times, and this trip marked his 19th. He hoped that this visit would further strengthen cooperation between the governments, parliaments, and people, fostering closer ties. He stated that the Republic of the Union of Myanmar has a newly established democratic government and parliament based on the Myanmar constitution, and he wished for cooperation between the Myanmar parliament and the Thai parliament to facilitate the exchange and sharing of experiences.
Mr. Min Aung Hlaing also stated that Myanmar and Thailand share a good relationship, encompassing culture, religion, and other aspects. He believes this relationship will become even stronger in the future, particularly in cooperating to address issues such as transboundary haze, which is currently being upgraded for progress, and river pollution in northern Thailand. Despite facing various challenges in governing the country, he pledged to strive for a full democratic system in accordance with Thai law and demonstrated a commitment to national development. He requested that Thailand provide appropriate protection and care for the more than 4 million Myanmar citizens residing in Thailand, in accordance with Thai law.
