Minister Ekanat Promphan Advocates for Comprehensive Power Tariff Overhaul

Bangkok: A bold initiative to revamp the power tariff system was announced today by Mr. Ekanat Promphan, the Minister of Energy, at Government House. He emphasized that the primary goal of the Ministry of Energy is to provide electricity at fair prices that mirror actual costs for citizens. The ministry is currently in the process of collecting feedback from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), as any adjustments in electricity rates will impact both the general public and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). Consequently, the ministry is awaiting the outcomes of these consultations before proceeding.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Ekanat highlighted the government's intention to reduce electricity prices for the public by reassessing rates for residential properties with high consumption. The government aims to tackle several related issues, including resolving unfair contractual arrangements with power plants and addressing system inefficiencies that necessitate a comprehensive overhaul.

An essential component of the reform is the redefinition of electricity user categories. Specifically, Data Centers, categorized under Category 9, will face higher electricity tariffs due to their significant consumption and reliance on costly imported gas. The additional revenue from these higher rates will be used to subsidize and alleviate the electricity costs for the general public and local industries.

In terms of clean energy, Mr. Ekanat stated that the government will continue to promote solar rooftop installations and expedite the purchase of surplus electricity from the public, aiming to complete this process within the month. He clarified that the government's assistance will not be in the form of direct financial handouts but through support for down payments or reduced interest rates via state banks. This initiative is designed to encourage the installation of solar panels and the adoption of electric vehicles, contributing to a sustainable transformation of the nation's energy infrastructure.
