Bangkok: The Ministry of Commerce has initiated the "Thai Chicken Eggs to Help Thais" sale, offering a total of 3.42 million eggs at prices 10% lower than the current market rate. This nationwide initiative is set to run from August 13 to August 31, following a recent surge in egg prices.
According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Internal Trade is organizing distribution points across the country to facilitate the "Thai Chicken Eggs Help Thai Eggs" program. The initiative is a response to the recent increase in the farm-gate price of mixed-size chicken eggs, which rose to 4 baht per egg. Despite a reported 3% decrease in egg production, the department assures there will be no shortage of eggs.
Mr. Witiyakorn Maneenet, Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, stated that the price adjustment was announced by the egg-laying chicken cooperative network, increasing the recommended price from 3.80 baht to 4.00 baht per egg, effective from August 7, 2026. To mitigate the impact of this price rise, the department is coordinating with provincial commerce offices to establish sales points for affordable eggs.
In Bangkok, these eggs will be available through Blue Flag activities in community areas, while in the provinces, sales points will cover all 76 provinces. The initiative aims to distribute 3.42 million eggs nationwide to ease the cost of living. Additionally, Blue Flag sales points will offer essential consumer goods like rice and cooking oil at reduced prices.
Mr. Witiyakorn highlighted that while egg production has decreased by about 3%, there is no current shortage. With approximately 53.85 million laying hens in August 2026, the estimated daily egg production stands at 43.35 million eggs. The department is working to ensure a steady supply and fair pricing amid rising costs.
Efforts are underway to expand distribution channels for affordable eggs and maintain market stability. The Department of Internal Trade is collaborating with the Department of Livestock Development to boost egg supply and regulate market prices.
Consumers are encouraged to report any instances of price gouging to the Department of Internal Trade hotline at 1569. Violations of the Price Control and Service Act can result in severe penalties, including fines up to 140,000 baht or imprisonment for up to 7 years, or both.
