CHONBURI: The Ministry of Culture has introduced Moo Deng, a popular pygmy hippo, as the presenter for Loi Krathong, a traditional Thai festival. This initiative aims to promote Thailand's cultural heritage and boost the cultural economy through soft power. The ministry expressed gratitude to the Khao Kheow Open Zoo team for helping disseminate Thai culture globally via Moo Deng's growing online fame. According to Thai News Agency, the project was launched under the supervision of Ms. Sudawan Wangsupakitchkosol, Minister of Culture. The event saw participation from several key figures, including Ms. Ploy Thanikul, Assistant Minister to the Ministry of Culture, and Mr. Atthaporn Sriran, Director of the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand. The initiative aims to leverage Moo Deng's popularity to communicate Thai cultural values worldwide, aligning with the government's strategy to drive economic growth through cultural soft power. Ms. Sudawan highlighted the importance of transforming cultural assets int o economic capital by creating a supportive ecosystem and infrastructure. The focus remains on disseminating creative culture and Thai identity globally, thus enhancing Thai knowledge, abilities, and creativity to generate economic value. The initiative also emphasizes the conservation and development of arts, culture, and local wisdom to add value to the Thai economy on the international stage. The collaboration with the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand and Khao Kheow Open Zoo is part of the 'Thai Cultural Content for Soft Power Presented by Moo Deng' project. It seeks to promote Thai culture through Moo Deng as a media symbol, showcasing Thailand's charm and creativity. Moo Deng's story has gained traction on social media and international news platforms, demonstrating Thailand's strength in creating engaging content. The launch event also included a seminar featuring industry experts discussing the role of Moo Deng in bringing Thai culture to the international community. The event awarded the 'Th ai Cuteness: Tua Teng To Thai' certificate to Moo Deng as a communicator of Thainess. The Ministry of Culture plans to use Moo Deng in various cultural activities and festivals to further promote Thai heritage globally. Ms. Sudawan announced plans to use Moo Deng as a focal point during the Loi Krathong festival, aiming to attract global attention to this Thai tradition. Moo Deng's cuteness appeals to all ages, making it an effective representative of Thailand's soft power. Over 100 organizations have shown interest in involving Moo Deng in various activities, highlighting its international appeal. Mr. Atthaporn Srihan expressed readiness to allow Moo Deng to participate in events without charging fees, crediting the team for showcasing Moo Deng's unique behaviors online. Mr. Prasop Riengngen thanked the Khao Kheow Open Zoo for enabling Moo Deng to represent Thai culture effectively, noting its potential to elevate the Loi Krathong festival to a global event.
