Ministry of Foreign Affairs reveals no Thais affected by protests in Dhaka

Bangkok, The Foreign Ministry spokesman revealed that there are no reports of Thais being affected by the violent protests by students in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He warned them to refrain from leaving their residences and to closely monitor announcements from local authorities. Mr. Nikorndej Plangoon, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, revealed that according to news reports, there have been violent protests involving thousands of students in Dhaka, Bangladesh since the evening of July 18, 2014. The protesters gathered, destroyed buildings in public areas, blocked roads and public transportation, and clashed between the protesters and police officers, which resulted in numerous deaths and more than 1,000 injuries. Later, the Bangladeshi government announced the suspension of telephone and internet services and increased security measures in Dhaka. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been informed by the Royal Thai Embassy in Dhaka that there ar e no reports of Thai nationals or Thai students affected by the incident. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to warn Thai nationals in Dhaka to avoid traveling near protest areas and consider refraining from unnecessary travel outside their residences during this time. Thai nationals are asked to closely follow news, warnings, and related orders from local governments.
