Bangkok: The Ministry of Transport is actively addressing a recent data leak issue, focusing on closing security loopholes and cautioning citizens against scammers posing as officials. Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, recently visited the Department of Land Transport to oversee efforts aimed at mitigating the breach. During the visit, he emphasized that the leaked information is not valid for any transactions.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Siripong, accompanied by Mr. Cheep Nomseian, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, and officials from the ThaiCERT team and the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, reviewed the progress of the investigation. Initial findings have identified traces of wrongdoing, and a thorough investigation is underway. The ThaiCERT team is on-site to assist with digital forensics and scrutinize API systems and associated agencies.
Mr. Siripong has issued directives to the Cyber Crime Police and ThaiCERT to diligently investigate and prosecute those responsible for the breach. The Department of Land Transport has lodged a police report to initiate legal proceedings and is fully cooperating with authorities. Additionally, Mr. Siripong has called for more frequent cybersecurity audits and the development of an immediate action plan to prevent similar incidents in the future, which must be reported to the Minister.
The Department of Land Transport disclosed that it shares data with 63 agencies to enhance public service delivery. While the leak involved real information, it is limited to basic data and is not usable for transactions. The department has stated that any dissemination of the leaked data will result in legal action.
Furthermore, the Department has warned the public to be vigilant against scammers exploiting the breach. These scammers might use details like license plate numbers or owner's names to deceive people into transferring money or providing more personal information. The Department clarified that it does not request personal information, money for fines, or send links via SMS or Line for transactions. Citizens are advised to remain calm if contacted, to avoid clicking links or downloading unknown applications, and to refrain from conducting any financial transactions as instructed by scammers.
