Motorcyclist’s Fatal Crash on Chalerm Mahanakhon Expressway Highlights Traffic Law Violations

Bangkok: A young man secretly rode his motorcycle onto the expressway, crashed into a metal guardrail, and was decapitated, dying instantly. A tragic accident occurred on an expressway in the Rama 2 area. A 56-year-old man riding a motorcycle lost control and crashed into a guardrail, resulting in his decapitation and immediate death.

According to Thai News Agency, Police Lieutenant Parit Sriharangpairoj, Deputy Investigator at Bang Mod Police Station, received a report of a motorcycle accident where the motorcycle lost control and crashed into a guardrail on the Chalerm Mahanakhon Expressway (Dao Khanong Expressway), approximately 300 meters before the toll booth, in Bang Mod Subdistrict, Chom Thong District, Bangkok. The accident resulted in one fatality. He rushed to the scene with forensic doctors from Siriraj Hospital and volunteer staff from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation.

At the scene, a blue Honda Wave i motorcycle with Bangkok license plates was found lying on its side on the road, severely damaged. Nearby, the body of a deceased man was found, later identified as Mr. Samai, 56 years old. He had multiple severe injuries from the impact, with body parts scattered around the area. Authorities cordoned off the area to collect evidence meticulously.

An inspection of the accident scene revealed signs of a severe collision with the roadside guardrail, along with blood stains on the metal structure. The initial assumption is that the deceased may have been riding a motorcycle at high speed before losing control and crashing into the guardrail with full force, sustaining serious injuries and dying at the scene.

However, police have not yet determined the cause of the accident, as no other vehicle was found at the scene. They will expedite the review of CCTV footage from nearby areas and gather additional evidence to determine the true cause of this incident.

Initially, officials assigned volunteers to transport the deceased's body for a thorough autopsy at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, before contacting relatives to collect the body for religious ceremonies.

This incident serves as an important cautionary tale for road users, especially motorcycle riders, who should exercise increased caution regarding speed and ensure their physical condition and vehicle are always ready to drive to reduce the risk of serious accidents. Motorcycles should never be ridden on expressways, as this is a violation of traffic laws, primarily for disregarding regulations or announcements issued by traffic officers under the Road Traffic Act B.E. 2522 (1979), which strictly prohibits motorcycles from using expressways.

Violators will be subject to penalties under relevant laws, including fines under the Land Traffic Act, with a maximum fine of 1,000 baht. Under the Expressway Act, violators may face imprisonment of up to 3 months, a fine of 1,000 to 5,000 baht, or both (according to regulations set by the Expressway Authority of Thailand). Furthermore, violating prohibition signs, especially those prohibiting motorcycles, is an additional offense under Section 152, punishable by a fine of up to 4,000 baht. In addition, entering such areas may result in car insurance companies refusing liability in the event of an accident.
