Mae sot: “Big Lek” has highlighted the closure of the Myanmar border in Tak Province after recent fighting erupted in the region. The Thai side remains unaffected but maintains a heightened state of readiness.
According to Thai News Agency, General Nattapol Nakphanit, the Minister of Defense, announced the temporary closure of the Thai-Myanmar border checkpoint in Mae Sot District, Tak Province, for a duration of seven days. This decision follows clashes between Myanmar’s military forces and ethnic minority groups. General Nattapol assured that security measures have been consistently enforced, emphasizing the media’s focus on Thailand’s eastern border while recent issues have arisen on the western front due to ongoing conflicts. These clashes have caused significant hardship for residents in the western areas. Security forces are on alert, ready to respond with warning shots if any cross-border firing occurs.
General Nattapol further explained that the Tak Province border remains under control, with no significant incursions reported. However, there have been instances of shelling crossing into Thai territory, although it is unclear which side initiated the fire. He emphasized that there is no evidence of intentional targeting of Thai land, as the conflict is primarily between Myanmar’s government and ethnic minority groups.
Regarding potential migration of affected Myanmar citizens into Thailand, General Nattapol mentioned that while preparations are not fully in place, the Ministry of Interior is actively preparing for such scenarios. Provincial governors are engaged in continuous drills. When questioned about the likelihood of intensifying conflict as winter approaches, General Nattapol reiterated the army’s readiness, noting that similar situations have occurred in previous years. He expressed a commitment to monitoring the western front, including areas such as Mae Hong Son and Tak provinces, to ensure preparedness.
