Natthachanon Clarifies Loan for Heart Treatment Amidst Corruption Allegations

Bangkok: Natthachanon Srikornguek, Member of Parliament for Songkhla from the Bhumjaithai Party, has clarified the source of funds for his heart surgery, stating that a loan from senior figure Newin Chidchob will serve as new evidence in his appeal to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).

According to Thai News Agency, Natthachanon took to his personal Facebook account to explain the circumstances surrounding his heart surgery expenses. He revealed that he secured a loan from Newin Chidchob, president and CEO of Buriram United Football Club, which was documented through a clear loan agreement. This agreement was acknowledged by the hospital and will be presented as new evidence in his ongoing appeal to the NACC, following allegations that his parliamentary assistant paid for his medical bills.

Natthachanon shared his journey from his humble beginnings in Songkhla province to becoming an elected MP for Songkhla Constituency 7, representing the Bhumjaithai Party in 2019. However, his tenure was abruptly challenged when he was diagnosed with three blocked coronary arteries, necessitating emergency surgery shortly after beginning his parliamentary role.

The initial estimate for his hospital stay was capped at 400,000 baht for a seven-day period. Unfortunately, complications arose, including fluid accumulation in the heart, leading to a second surgery and an extended hospital stay of over 20 days. This escalated the total expenses to 900,000 baht. In a moment of desperation, Natthachanon turned to Newin Chidchob, who assisted with the medical expenses based on humanitarian grounds. The hospital was informed of this arrangement, and a formal agreement was established between the two parties.

The situation escalated when allegations were brought before the NACC, claiming that Natthachanon's MP assistant had covered the medical expenses. Natthachanon refuted these claims and emphasized the cultural importance of expressing gratitude in Thai society. He admitted that his initial explanation to the NACC may have been insufficient, as he sought to avoid burdening senior officials. Nonetheless, when the NACC voted 5:1 to appeal, he submitted additional evidence, including the loan agreement dated November 20, 2019, and further witnesses for the NACC's review.

Natthachanon remains resolute in his belief that "the truth will always prevail" and is committed to a transparent legal process. He is prepared to accept the outcome and continue fighting the case with integrity, confident that his sincerity will ultimately be validated.
