Oslo:The announcement of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize is scheduled for October 9th at the Norwegian Nobel Institute. A total of 287 nominations were submitted, consisting of 208 individuals and 79 organizations. The identities of the nominees remain confidential, secured in an underground vault at the institute, with the option for nominees to disclose their own identities.
According to Thai News Agency, leaders from Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan have reportedly nominated U.S. President Donald Trump. However, verification of these nominations is not possible, and experts suggest that even if nominated, Trump's chances of winning are slim.
Strong contenders for the prize this year include Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice, and Francesca Albanese, who serves as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in occupied Palestine. Other potential candidates are Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms, Save the Children, and the International Space Station, which showcases international cooperation amidst global tensions.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee, responsible for selecting the laureate, is composed of five members appointed by the Norwegian Parliament. These members, mostly retired politicians, are chosen to reflect the parliamentary balance in Norway. The committee is chaired by the president of the Norwegian branch of PEN International.
Eligibility for the prize is determined by the criteria set by Alfred Nobel in 1895, focusing on contributions to international friendship, army reduction, and peace promotion. Christian Berg Harpwiken, the committee's secretary, emphasizes the need to consider the award in the current context.
Nominations can be submitted by a wide range of people, including government officials, academics, and past laureates. The nomination period ended on January 31. The committee meets monthly to discuss candidates and strives for a unanimous decision, resorting to a majority vote if necessary.
The prize includes a gold medal, a certificate, a cash award of 12 million Swedish kronor, and global recognition. The award ceremony will take place on December 10th at Oslo City Hall, marking the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.
