Bangkok: The National Security Council (NSC) has approved six strategic measures aimed at bolstering security and reviewing peace talks in Thailand's southern border provinces. The measures were announced following a meeting chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul, with a focus on addressing the ongoing challenges and improving the efficacy of current strategies.
According to Thai News Agency, the NSC meeting underscored the importance of enhancing existing security protocols. The first measure involves heightened security and surveillance, with military and police forces directed to monitor key border areas and control the movement of people, as there is a possibility that perpetrators have crossed into neighboring countries.
The second measure calls for strict law enforcement against violent groups and those preparing for violence. The NSC has tasked relevant agencies with ensuring that legal actions are comprehensive, targeting both individuals and groups involved in such activities.
A significant aspect of the meeting was the decision to review the content of peace talks. Changes in facilitators and delays have prompted a reassessment to ensure discussions are relevant to the current situation and conducive to peace.
The fourth measure seeks to expand reintegration opportunities for former dissidents. Known as the "Bringing People Home" project, this initiative aims to provide a wider array of options for individuals willing to reintegrate into society.
Cooperation with Malaysia forms the basis of the fifth measure, focusing on diplomatic and security coordination. Thailand plans to issue Interpol red notices for perpetrators with pending cases in Malaysia, facilitating their extradition and prosecution.
Lastly, the NSC has called for adjustments in public communication to prevent division and misunderstanding. By improving communication strategies, the government aims to reduce provocations and promote a more unified approach to resolving conflicts in the area.
NSC Secretary-General Chatchai Bangchawad highlighted the importance of dialogue, noting that while strict law enforcement is necessary, finding the right moment for effective peace talks remains crucial.
